Kelly-Marie Burdekin

Following a lengthy stint in London, Kelly-Marie recently moved back to her roots in the New Forest; a place where the ponies roam free and she credits for her whimsical nature. A vintage buyer, designer-maker and prop stylist, Kelly-Marie is most happy when rummaging at car boots, house clearances or skip diving for the next vintage find. Most of it ends up in her Etsy shop, while the rest decorates her curiosity shop of a home.

She scares her fiancé with her unhealthy obsession with French antique wedding accessories, collects old books for their illustrations, loves dancing to 90s r&b and has a passion for mythology, nature and history (particularly design and architecture). One of her biggest achievements was giving a talk at her favourite of all historical buildings, the V&A museum. All of Kelly-Marie’s loves and inspirations are catalogued in her blog, A Harem Of Peacocks.

A few questions about nice things...

Who do you most admire?

Apart from my family and my fiancé Craig, I admire people who stay positive and follow their dreams no matter what, even when it means being brave and facing adversity head on. I admire them because they make their own happiness, they are successful because they are so focused on what they want and genuinely follow their dreams regardless of what others may think or what is expected of them.

What are your favourite possessions?

Anything with sentiment. I have so many things that were given to me by my fiancé, family and friends that I could never part with because they have too many memories. My collection of old books is a firm favourite, especially my antique children’s books as the illustrations never fail to inspire me. I also have an Art Deco TV cabinet that was once made for Claridge’s which is my most favourite furniture find. I had to downsize when we left London but I know that no matter where we end up that cabinet has got to fit!

Tell us about your perfect day or weekend...

That’s a really hard question to answer as I have lots of versions of my perfect day. Right now I would say it would consist of a beautiful sunny day (with a breeze) spent with my fiancé Craig roaming around wild gardens and a picnic made up of all of our favourite food.

In the evening we would meet our friends and family for dinner and drinks overlooking the sea or a lake with the moon and candles lighting our evening, followed by dancing and giggles under the stars.

What makes you happiest?

Being with my loved ones, reading, creating and being around nature and animals.

What would you like to do in the future?

I really want to travel, that is top priority, and I love variety in my life so I would want to continue having lots of different things to focus on. In an ideal world I would have some kind of shop environment that would incorporate a studio where I could do my prop work. If it was the right set up then the shop would only be open part time and the rest would be based online. That way I could still take on freelance work and combine buying stock for the shop with travelling. That’s the dream but above all I want to live a happy and healthy life with my family and fiancé (one day husband) Craig. I never want to let my work stand in the way of our happiness.
