#BackBritain: Win a Giant Hamper of Goodies & Tea for Two from Tiptree!

April 9th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

Spring may have only just sprung but we’re already finding it hard to contain our excitement about the great big British summer that lies ahead – tennis at Wimbledon, rowing at Henley, cheering on Team GB, picnics, street parties, strawberries, Pimms and of course that most cherished British tradition of all (and our most favourite!)…afternoon tea! So it is with quite substantial delight that we announce Great British brand Tiptree as this month’s Back Britain sponsor!

The most traditional of all British jam makers have kindly donated a giant prize hamper full of Tiptree afternoon tea essentials (an entire year’s supply!) including 24 jars of marmalade, 18 jars of jam, 12 jars of honey, 12 jars of condiments, 3 jars of fruit spread, 3 jars of jelly, 3 jars of lemon curd and 6 boxes of Tiptree tea – all the makings of a Jubilee Tea Party to remember!

Wilkin & Sons Ltd. have been producing their luxury conserves since 1885 with the Wilkin family having grown fruit at Tiptree in Essex since 1757. They now farm over 1000 acres with all the fruit grown going into their luxury conserves (the ‘Tiny Tip Raspberry Jam’ and Lemon Curd are longstanding favourites of ours!).

We’re also rather excited to have discovered Tiptree own four traditional tea rooms - The Lordship at Writtle, The Essex Rose at Dedham, ‘the lock’ at Heybridge Basin and the Tiptree Visitor Centre in Tiptree. We can’t wait to visit and are a tinge jealous that in addition to the yummy hamper, our lucky winner will also be awarded a sumptuous three tier ‘High Tea for Two’ at The Lordship at Writtle. This latest addition to the ‘Tiptree’ tea room collection serves up delicious homemade food and also features a lovely gift shop stocking the entire Tiptree range as well as plenty more to tempt the dedicated afternoon tea taker!

HOW TO ENTER: To get your mitts on these fabulous prizes we want to hear all about your favourite place for afternoon tea – in as few or as many words as you wish! This might be a secret spot to pick up the finest ingredients for afternoon tea, a special place to DIY afternoon tea with a blanket, flask and hamper or perhaps your favourite tea-time establishment. To enter, simply submit your prose via the site by midnight 6 May 2012!

Easter Adventures in Cornwall

April 9th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

Come rain or shine our extended family (dogs included of course) come together every Easter to make the annual pilgrimage to Cornwall’s rugged North coast to stay in our little house by the sea in charming Trebetherick just next to Polzeath. This year was no exception and following a rather lengthly journey we set foot on Cornish sand on Thursday evening in anticipation of four gorgeous days complete with sunny skies, sparkling seas and the usual deluge of deliciously fresh Cornish food and drink.

my favourite finds at the Antique and Flea Market and a favourite view of Polzeath beach

In its usual laid back fashion Cornwall (over)delivered on each count and we enjoyed glorious (sunny!) walks along the coast path from Polzeath to Rock, a fish and chip supper at Rick Stein’s in Padstow, pottering for trinkets at a flea market in the Royal Cornwall Showground, browsing the lovely shops of Wadebridge for vintage furniture and supping ‘lovely’ coffee in Relish, dining on freshly caught fish at the Mowhay in Trebetherick and topping up our cake reserves courtesy of the Exploding Bakery at Polzeath’s family friendly hub the Tube Station. We each returned relaxed, rejuvinated and sporting a few more freckles we when we left!

To find out more about each of the lovely places we visited make sure you sign up to our holidays newsletter which ‘flies the flag’ for a different county in the UK each month – bringing together handpicked recommendations for the best places to ‘snuggle & sleep’, ‘potter & shop’, ‘walk & ponder’ and ‘eat & drink’.

#BackBritain: Mary Portas’ Kinky Knickers launch at Liberty of London

February 9th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

Tonight saw us heading out to the launch of Mary Portas’ fabulously British brand of lingerie, Kinky Knickers which took place at one of our favourite heritage stores Liberty of London. In a bid to ‘turn the lights back on for Great British manufacturing’ Mary and her talented workforce have spent the last 4 months grafting their gussets off in a disused factory in Middleton, Greater Manchester.

The result of this labour of love is ‘Kinky Knickers’ – a truly great British made product they should all be hugely proud of. Each pair is handmade from the finest Nottingham stretch lace in 4 sizes (XS, S, M, L) and comes in 3 colourways – black, nude and fushia pink/orange. Better still they each include a little personalised something just for you.

It was a real priviledge to be there this evening to share in the success of a fantastic achievement by Mary and her team after what has clearly been a rather gritty few months. We wish them all the very best with their venture and very much look forward to watching the full story of Kinky Knickers ‘Mary’s Sweatshop’ on Channel 4 later this year.

So, here’s a very British hip hip hooray to Mary and her team (especially Georgina!) for doing their bit to #BackBritain!

If you’d like to do your bit to Back Britain why not enter our fantastic writing competition. From a fabulous walk, best place for tea & cake or favourite spot to take in a glorious view, tell us ‘Why You Love It’ and help us celebrate all that makes Great Britain so very unique and fabulous! Each lovely entry will be posted up on the site with the most unique well written piece bagging a selection of gorgeous prizes by some of our favourite British brands!

Out and About on the Back Britain Campaign Trail

January 26th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

Last weekend saw Rebecca and I out and about on the ‘Back Britain’ campaign trail as we joined fellow entrepreneurs at School for Creative Startups for a three day pop-up showcase at the rather stunning Zabludowicz Collection up in Chalk Farm, London.

As you can see, the purpose behind our lovely stand (creations courtesy of our wonderful illustrator Jess Linares) was to get people thinking about  what it is they love about Britain, from favourite days out to gorgeous views, yummy places to eat and secret shopping spots.

We were thrilled by the response and now have an enormous jar full of unique insider information that we’ll be sharing with you all via our twitter feed (@TiYKingdom) over the next few weeks and months. As well as the wonderful team at School for Creative Startups, we’d like to thank each and every one of the lovely folk who popped by and took the time to ponder, share and have a natter about their favourite local things to see and do.

If you’d like to join our campaign to ‘Back Britain’ then ‘Tell Us Why You Love It’ by entering our wonderful competition! We’ll be teaming up with some of our favourite British brands over the coming year and awarding a prize each month to the most unique and well written piece! TiYK Featured in Red Magazine at Winchester’s Corner House!

January 5th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

This year has started with huge excitement here at TiYK with Rebecca and I thrilled to be featured in February’s edition of Red Magazine, one of our favourite reads!

Asked to divulge details of our ‘favourite table’ we duly nominated The Corner House in Winchester, a lovely café bar with a super cosy interior, fabulous homemade food and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It’s exactly the type of business that inspired us to launch TiYK – lovely, independent and run by a local who’s poured her skill and passion into it.

From the excitement and headaches of developing the TiYK website, the juggle of Rebecca’s pregnancy and master-planning of my perfect wedding – this table has heard it all! It’s a place we feel inspired, productive and downright comfortable – not once have we felt like it was time to leave despite having nursed two coffees for hours and spread our paperwork everywhere! The lovely thing is that this place feels and looks very much like an extension of our own homes.

We’d love to hear about the place you love most in your local area, whether it’s a gorgeous cafe to enjoy time with friends, an inspiring walk through beautiful countryside or a wonderful workshop that encourages your creativity. Join us in celebrating all that is fabulous about Great Britain by sharing this with our community as part of our Back Britain campaign. Each lovely entry will be posted on the site and the most unique will bag some lovely prizes kindly donated by Cabbages & Roses. To enter, simply post your idea below or send it direct to us via the site by clicking here.
