Finding London's Finest Fayre on Maltby Street

A short stroll from Tower Bridge, a small, tucked-away community of food producers and importers have come together to offer a food shopping experience a world away from queuing at the supermarket. This is
Maltby Street, where the traders with warehouses under railway arches open their doors on Saturdays to sell a select range of the finest fayre you can lay your hands on in London - from fresh mozzarella and Basque salami to biodynamically grown vegetables, artisan breads and micro-brewery beer.
The appeal of Maltby Street is quite simply that the food on offer is exceptional. From Topolski with its high-quality Polish smoked sausages to Borough Cheese Company specialising in Comte cheese, each of the producers has an in-depth knowledge of the food they’re selling and take pride in what they do.
For those who love to cook and eat, it really is a foodie paradise. Those in the know head for St John’s bakery to start their day with a delectable custard doughnut, and summertime sees the Maltby Street crowd joined by La Grotta Ices, selling Kitty’s own-made elegant, seasonal gelati which are utterly divine!
This lovely thing to do in London was kindly shared by Jenny Linford - inveterate food shopper and author of Food Lovers’ London, a cosmopolitan guide to London’s gastronomic scene.
